Wheeling, W.Va. – With we’re still four months away from the start of football season, excitement is brewing at Wheeling University for the Fall Boys. They are currently going through their spring prom schedule, but on Wednesday the team released their 2022 schedule. There are six exciting home games against opponents from the Mountain East Conference (MEC), including Glenville State at the University of Charleston, and the first-ever home game against UNC Pembroke.

The 2021 season was a year of firsts and memorable moments for the Cardinals as they finished the year with the best record in program history at 5-6, 5-5 in MEC play, put in evidenced by a few great moments. The leader of all came on Homecoming 2021 when they secured a 26-20 win over rivals West Liberty. They also earned their first shutout win in program history and finished seventh in the MEC, their highest full-season finish in program history. The head coach Zac Bruney enters his fourth season as head coach and brings back a team that has a lot of experience behind it.

While the team had some highlights throughout the year, some of its individual players did as well as the program continues to grow. Sy Alli IV became the first 1,000-yard rusher in program history when he led the MEC with 1,014 yards last season and averaged 92.8 yards per game. Alli has improved his season total in rushing yards in each of his three seasons with the program and is looking to continue to exhibit that this coming season. On the defensive side of the ball, Ryan Gorman finished second in program history with 75 tackles on the season and defensive lineman Brandon Munoz set the new single-season sack record at Wheeling with 7.0.

Looking ahead to the 2022 season, Wheeling will play six home games beginning Sept. 1 and ending in the final game of the season on Nov. 12. They open things up with a Thursday night non-conference game against Seton Hill in a rematch of their non-conference game from a year ago. They then hit the road for two consecutive weeks to Notre Dame (September 10) and Alderson Broaddus (September 17). They end September with a home game against Glenville State on September 24, before starting October with a road trip to West Virginia Wesleyan on October 1.

After playing just two home games through September and early October, the Cardinals have stepped things up with four of their last six home games. Week six will give Wheeling fans their first live glimpse of UNC Pembroke on October 8 and the Cardinals will return home the following week against Frostburg State on October 15. Wheeling will then hit the road for the last time in 2022 when they head to West Liberty (October 22) and Concord (October 29). They will conclude the season at home against the University of Charleston on November 5, then celebrate their seniors on November 12 for their final game against Fairmont State.

Wheeling University Football’s season kicks off Thursday, September 1 in non-conference action against Seton Hill at Bishop Schmitt Field. Season tickets, individual match tickets and more information will be released at a later date.

the MEC will announce any games that will eventually be moved to Thursday at a later date.
