Yesterday, the Florida Gators and head coach Billy Napier announced a new tradition within the GatorMade portion of the organization to the Florida Football Team, the honor of Danny Wuerffel Man of the Month. This month, the honor went to the redshirt freshman linebacker Chief Borders.

The honor is awarded to “a football scholar-athlete who exemplifies the Gator Standard, demonstrating holistic excellence in leadership, character, service and academics,” the Florida Football Program said via Twitter. Honor is not an achievement on the pitch, but rather one on the character of the player.

Wuerffel, who was the program’s quarterback from 1993-96, met with the media last week to discuss his involvement with the Gators and the GatorMade program.

“I had the opportunity to speak with the players at different times, really about leadership and trying to develop leaders,” Wuerffel told the media. “I’ve met some of them in groups and some individually; it’s been really encouraging. I’m really excited to be associated with GatorMade and help showcase some of the great things they do. .”

The Gators football social media team posted a video of Napier announcing the honor to his team and Borders as the honor’s first recipient.

“We are starting a new tradition within the GatorMade portion of our organization where we are going to have Wuerffel Man of the Month,” Napier told the team via video posted by the Florida Football Program on Twitter.

“And it’s not about ability on the pitch, it’s more about your character, it’s more about selflessness, it’s more about how you treat people. The ability to live your life to have an impact on others, to bring things to the team, that extra dimension.”

It’s clear to see in the video how well-liked Borders is, a player who has all the intangibles Napier is looking for in the football program he’s building. Borders was also on the 2021 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll, another testament to his hard work and dedication not only on the court, but off it as well.

The 6-foot-4, 232-pound Borders enters his sophomore season at Florida with a real shot at earning some serious playing time at linebacker, and more specifically;y team’s Jack, or right-side-of-the-line peak position defensive. His prowess at getting after quarterback will have the opportunity to be on full display this fall.

In 2021, Borders would only appear in four games, redshirting the season. He recorded his first career tackle against UCF in the Gasparilla Bowl on December 23.
