The Tribune-Review and the TribLive High School Sports Network feature each member of the Trib HSSN preseason football all-star team of 25 players. Players will be recognized on July 22 at HSSN Media Day at Kennywood Park.

Terry Totten wanted to remove some heavy weight lifting platforms from a central Catholic training hall.

Donovan Hinish and his brother, Kurt, offered to help.

“I went to get a saw and some tools,” Totten said. “By the time I got back they had already torn things up by hand.”

That perfectly sums up the Hinishes’ blue collar ethics and work force, traits Totten appreciates and Notre Dame loves.

Donovan Hinish, a 6-foot-2, 275-pound two-way tackle, has signed up to play for the Fighting Irish, following in the footsteps of Kurt Hinish, a graduate student lineman at South Bend.

But first, the new senior lineman will do the heavy lifting this fall for the Vikings, the two-time defending WPIAL Class 6A champions. Chances are he’s enjoying it every second.

Hinish is one of 25 players chosen for the TribHSSN preseason football all-star team. The team will be recognized on July 22 at an HSSN event at Kennywood Park.

Hinish, who is from Baldwin, is the dirty kid who growls when he knocks you down; the kid who uses all the black in his eyes; the child who embodies the pure grain.

“He really worked on it,” Totten said. “It took a while. He is always ready to work hard. He put concrete and things like that. His father is under construction.

It’s no secret that Totten loves to run football. With players like Hinish, he can load the playbook with draws, counters, traps, and swipes.

“We believe he will be effective on both sides of the ball, and that is becoming more and more rare these days,” said the coach. “We feel pretty good running the ball behind him. (In defense), he likes to minimize.

A player of all conferences as a junior, Hinish wears the same number his brother wore for the Vikings: 51. has it with different numbers: # 16 in the state and # 39 in the nation in defensive tackle.
