OHSAA football resumes games in two months with some regional changes

COLUMBUS – The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced regional football assignments for the upcoming 2021 season on Tuesday. The 10-week regular season begins the week of August 16, with the top 16 schools in each region advancing to the playoffs. which will start from October 29th to 30th.

As previously announced, divisional school assignments for the upcoming 2021-22 school year will remain the same as for the 2020-21 school year across all sports.

The only school in Southwest Ohio Division I that is not in Region 4 for 2021 is Middletown which will be in Region 2 in terms of the playoffs where many schools are from the Columbus area.

Included with Greater Cincinnati schools in Division II, Region 8 are Belmont (Dayton), Briggs (Columbus), Fairborn, Lima Senior, Piqua, Sidney, Stebbins (Dayton), Teays Valley (Asheville), Tecumseh (New Carlisle) ), Troy, West Carrollton and Xenia.

In Division III, Western Brown and Wilmington are in Region 11 for the playoffs. Greater Cincinnati schools in Region 12 are Bellbrook, Butler (Vandalia), Carroll, Celina, Greenville, Ponitz, Shawnee (Lima), St. Mary’s Memorial, Trotwood-Madison, and Wapakoneta.

There are 25 schools in Division IV, Region 16, 25 in Division V, Region 20, 25 in Division VI, Region 24 and 22 in Division VII, Region 28.

In all sports, coaches have an unlimited number of days from June 1 to July 31 to conduct voluntary conditioning, strength training and instruction activities. In football, helmets are allowed during summer volunteering sessions.

Also in the sport of football, there is a mandatory five-day acclimatization period for all athletes prior to contact. Two of these days can be completed in July so that the shoulder pads can be worn on the first day of practice on August 1.

Sunday August 1 – First day of official coaching authorized

August 6-14 – Scrum dates

Monday August 16 – Start of the regular season (first Friday is August 20)

Tuesday September 14 – First weekly IT points released (every Tuesday after week 4)

Saturday 23 October – End of the regular season

Sunday October 24 – Announcement of final computer points and qualifying for the heats

Friday / Saturday 29-30 October – Regional playoffs 1st round

Friday / Saturday November 5 and 6 – Regional quarter-finals

Friday / Saturday 12-13 November – Regional semi-finals

Friday / Saturday 19-20 November – Regional finals

Friday / Saturday 25 November – Thanksgiving

Friday / Saturday November 26-27 – Semi-final state

Thursday / Friday / Saturday, 2-4 Dec – State Championships in Canton
