No Louisville football player selected in Athletic’s seven-round mock NFL Draft

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The 2022 NFL Draft is just under two weeks away, and several Louisville players are hoping to hear their names called on draft night. Eight Cardinals recently participated in the program’s annual Pros Day, highlighted by Qwynnterrio Cole, CJ Avery and Maurice Burkley.

With the draft fast approaching, the season of draft simulations and big panels is in full swing. Athletic’s Dane Brugler, one of the nation’s most comprehensive draft analysts, recently released his full seven-round 2022 NFL Draft, taking into account “scheme adjustments, organizational trends and reported level of interest”.

However, unlike in recent years when Louisville had become an NFL Draft staple, Brugler does not include any Cardinals among his 262 bogus draft picks.

There are a few cards that have a chance of being selected, or at least have a very good chance of being signed as an undrafted priority free agent. In his annual NFL Draft Guide, dubbed “The Beast,” Brugler listed Qwynnterrio Cole as the No. 28 safety in the draft class, Cole Bentley as the No. 30 center, Maurice Burkley as the running back. ball No. 56, CJ Avery as linebacker No. 65 and Jack Fagot as safety No. 110

Brugler was particularly commendable of Cole, calling him “a long, explosive athlete with an aggressive ability to defend the run”, but also questioned his “lack of range and transitions”.

“Cole passes the eyesight test with his lean musculature and is at his best in the box or when working downhill to trigger and drive,” Brugler wrote. “His production and performance showed no decline during his year in the FBS. His toughness and physicality were evident after five games on tape, but so were his tight hips and redirecting skills.”

The 2022 NFL Draft begins Thursday, April 28 at 8:00 p.m. EST on ESPN, ABC and the NFL Network. Louisville will kick off its 2022 campaign in Syracuse on Saturday, September 3.
