Louisville football players to watch: Jalen Mitchell, Kenderick Duncan

The football season is fast approaching and the Courier Journal is gearing up for the start of fall camp, which kicks off August 8, naming those who we believe are the 30 most important players to Louisville’s success.

The Cardinals open their season against Ole Miss in Atlanta on September 6, and it’s a ranking of the most important players heading into this game. Well in the top 20, we arrive at two positions which will be different from those of a year ago.

The offense has some production to replace after losing wide receivers Tutu Atwell and Dez Fitzpatrick in the NFL Draft with running back Javian Hawkins. The defense, although it has lost a few starters, largely returns to a group that was in the top 50 in total defense last season and expects to improve once again.

Editor’s Note: Over 30 days, Cameron Teague Robinson, Courier Journal’s Louisville football beat writer, and multimedia sports reporter Dominique Yates are counting down their 30 most important Louisville players for the 2021 season.

Louisville’s rushed attack is getting a complete overhaul this offseason with Javian Hawkins departing for the NFL. In Louisville’s favor, however, Mitchell gained some good experience last year and showed just how good he can be. He had 347 yards in his five games, including a 168-yard performance against Wake Forest and 76 yards against Virginia.

The 5-foot-10, 221-pound backhand isn’t going to impress you with superb speed like Hawkins, or ever Hassan Hall, but he’s a powerful back that’s smart on the hole and more agile than he is. it seems. He will have a great career at Louisville and this is his chance to win. Louisville will need him to be consistent to keep the Cardinals ahead of the sticks. If he can be, he will give the Cardinals a good option to replace Hawkins.

Much like Qwynnterrio Cole, Duncan was another much-needed addition to the security slim point. A native of Georgia Southern, Duncan was a first-team All-Sun Belt defensive player and recorded 28 tackles and two interceptions in a shortened six-game season.

In a full season in 2019, he totaled 79 tackles, two interceptions and eight breakouts. With Duncan at 6’3 “and 225 pounds, he adds great height and depth to the list. He and Cole could be two newcomers who are shining points this year.
