Idle SLU enters Southland Play ranked 14th, 15th in FCS national polls

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The University of Southeast Louisiana football team has advanced in both the Top 25 FCS Stats Perform and the Top 25 AFCA FCS Coaches, which were released on Monday.

The Inactive Lions (2-1) won two spots in the Stats Perform poll of 16e to 14e. In the coaches poll, SLU rose from 16e to 15e.

The Southeast enters the week ranked among the top 10 FCS nationally in percentage of third (57.1, 2sd), percentage of completion (74.3, 2sd), first tests (92, 9e), passing violation (411.7 YPG, 3rd), red zone violation (100.0, 1st), scoring the offense (49.0 points per game, 3rd), loss tackles allowed (2.0 per game, 1st), team passing efficiency (8e, 107.40) and total offense (554.7 ypg, 3rd). The Lions have scored 40 or more points in seven straight games.

The reigning senior quarterback and Walter Payton Award winner Cole kelley ranks in the national top 10 in all achievement categories. Playing behind a dominant offensive line and distributing the ball to a plethora of talented weapons, Kelley threw for 1,202 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions on 99 passes for 133 (74.4 completion percentage).

SLU is one of two schools in Southland ranked in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, as UIW debuted in 2021 in the poll at No.24. Nicholls receives votes. Both UIW and Nicholls are among those receiving votes in the AFCA’s Top 24 Coaches.

Southeastern opens the Southland Conference game on Saturday with a midday game at McNeese. The match will be televised on Cox Sports Television and ESPN +, while also being heard in the Hammond area on Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM / WFPR 1400 AM, as well as online at www.kajun107.net.
