Football star Megan Rapinoe stops by Cafe Hartford


A Hartford cafe received a surprise visit from professional soccer player Megan Rapinoe over the weekend, who was in town with her partner Sue Bird for a ceremony on UConn’s campus.

Rapinoe visited Story and Soil Coffee on Capitol Avenue on Sunday, and the cafe posted a photo in her Instagram Stories, showing the soccer star with her signature pink short haircut, beaming and flashing peace signs at the camera. .

“A return visit from the GOAT,” said the legend. Rapinoe actually visited the cafe with her teammates in 2018, when the United States Women’s National Team played at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The cafe posted a photo of the visit a year later when the team won the World Cup title.

Rapinoe was at the Storrs campus on Sunday morning with Bird, the great UConn and WNBA champion, to witness the unveiling of a monument commemorating Olympians and Paralympians linked to the athletic program. Bird was joined by 12 other Olympians linked to UConn, including Rebecca Lobo, Kara Wolters, Swin Cash, Asjha Jones and Jen Rizzotti.

UConn also honored the Olympians, including Stefanie Dolson, at half-time in the game against Notre Dame. Coach Geno Auriemma, who won gold as the USA’s head coach, and Canadian Olympian Aaliyah Edwards were also honored at the halftime ceremony.

Rapinoe and Bird got engaged in 2020, after four years of dating. According to the New York Times, the couple were living in Greenwich in late 2020 after Bird’s team, the Seattle Storm, won the WNBA title last year.
