HAMMOND, Louisiana – The University of Southeast Louisiana football team is ranked No. 14 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 and AFCA FCS Top 25 Coaches, which were released on Monday.

The Lions (3-1, 1-0 Southland) maintained their ranking in the Stats Perform media poll and earned a spot in the coaches poll after Saturday’s 38-35 road victory at McNeese in Game 1 of the Southland Conference of SLU.

Southeastern weathered a late Cowboy rally en route to their first victory at Lake Charles since 2014 and only their third victory at McNeese since returning from the program in 2003. The Lions finished with 546 total yards in the win, as as senior quarterback Cole kelley threw for 391 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for a high 65 yards and a score.

Kelley, who was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week earlier, in connection with CJ Turner, Nick kovacs and Tim Wilson Jr. on the scoring shots, while Taron jones also found the end zone on the ground. Justin douglas landed a one-handed interception to underline SLU’s defensive effort, while Brandon barbee led the Lions with five tackles. John Graves III, Garrett crawford, Bryce cage and Brendon Kelley were all credited with bags.

Behind an offensive line that allowed the fewest tackles for loss per game (2.50) in FCS, SLU ranks among the national leaders in total offense (552.5 yards per game, 3rd), scoring the offense (46.2 points per game, 4e), exceeding violation (406.5 ypg, 3rd), third down conversion percentage (57.7, 2sd), percentage of completion (73.7, 1st), first tests (122, 3rd), red zone violation (1.000, 1st) and the efficiency of the passes (165,85,8e). The Lions also occupy ninth place nationally in red zone defense (66.7).

SLU is one of three Southland schools in Stats Perform’s Top 25, with # 20 UIW and # 25 Nicholls. Both UIW and Nicholls are among the schools that received votes in the AFCA Coaching Poll.

When the Southeast No.14 travels to No.25 Nicholls for Saturday’s noon match at Thibodaux, it will mark the third consecutive meeting between the two league rivals in the state which featured two ranked teams. The match will be televised on Cox Sports Television and ESPN +, while also being heard in the Hammond area on Kajun 107.1 FM, The Highway 104.7 FM and The Boss 103.7 FM / WFPR 1400 AM, as well as online at www.kajun107.net. Saturday’s game will not be for the historic River Bell Trophy, as the River Bell Classic will only take place once in 2021, on November 18 in Hammond.
