Bassett senior Madison “Maddie” Barker signed her letter of intent this week to pursue her football career at Patrick & Henry Community College this fall.

Barker is a midfielder and one of the Bengals’ leaders in assists this season.

“I’ve been playing football since I was three years old and I’ve always loved it,” Barker told reporters at the signing ceremony. “There have been a few years and a few times where I’ve been burnt out and all that, but I’m really excited to play.”

“I’m really excited to maybe be able to go out there and see some games that Maddie is going to play here locally,” Bassett girls’ football coach John Miner said.

Bengal said he will miss playing with his teammates in Bassett.

“Two of my closest friends, we’re like inseparable, so having them on my team was the best part,” she said. “The bus rides and just going out to eat after games is what really stuck with me.”

Miner said Barker would be an asset to any program she joins.

“She’s a tenacious player. She puts her heart into it,” he said. “I had to drag her off the pitch at times because she wants to give her all there. She’s a fantastic team-mate, very supportive of all her other team-mates who have surrounded her.

Barker thanked those who helped her get to this point.

“My mom and my dad, and my stepdad and my stepmother, and my coach because he’s really encouraged me a lot this season to keep going and not give up,” she said.

The Patriots will begin play this fall.
